Joe said that Brady's three and four options are other QBs main go-to-guys. This year is the only year that is the case... in past years, his one and two guys have been other QBs fifth guys!

This was a great piece. Quality break-down!

- What most quarterbacks can’t do is find an open receiver in the presence of a pass rush when his top two choices are covered. -

Tom Brady's third and fourth options are "lesser" quarterbacks' first and second options. It's not too hard to find those open receivers when your line gives you 12 minutes in the pocket.

Excellent breakdown. You made all of the points that I would have, and Perich just topped it with a little syrup.

So, I'm the friend Pete, and I'll admit, I was playing devil's advocate, but I was also trying not to take something for granted. I've never played football at anything higher than the pickup level, and the way color commentary works these days, you could watch a heckuva lot of games and learn nothing.

I looked at the article, and the article seems to say that quarterbacks are worse now because defensive players are better. This lets certain stars shine out but makes quarterbacks who would have been "good enough" in previous eras not good enough for successful teams in the current NFL.

If it's the quality of the defense that has made the skills of the great QBs so much more precious than they use to be, shouldn't the defensive players get some credit for the sea change? And what I don't understand is how to compare the value of the skills across positions. How many sacks does a defensive lineman have to make in order to balance out a touchdown from a quarterback in terms of measuring quality statistically?

Yeah, I sound dumb about it, but it's because I don't know, and I don't just want to follow blindly.

If your friend Pete really thinks the value of a good quarterback is overrated, direct him immediately to Bill Simmons' column "Our National Arms Crisis" at http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/071221 . If after reading that he doesn't realize how ridiculous he sounds when he says the position is overrated, then he needs a doofslap to the head.

What most quarterbacks can’t do is find an open receiver in the presence of a pass rush when his top two choices are covered.

... after calling an audible, while ducking from a sack that a human could not possibly see, after faking a bobbled snap.

Every year, it's like I fall in love with him all over again.
