And yet I couldn't say, without Google's aid, who won the '71 or '73 Super Bowls.

(That may say more of my poor qualifications as an amateur sports columnist, but I think it's meaningful)

We'd talk about them, sure. But mainly for footnote purposes.

Look at the '72 Dolphins. They went undefeated in the regular season AND won the title. They barely get treated as a "special" team. Usually when I hear about them now, it's in a discussion about how they're worse than other great teams.

Football's a different sport, though. If any major league baseball team had an undefeated season I'm sure we'd talk about them, regardless of how they fared in the playoffs.

(Hell, as Henley later points out, a team that went undefeated in the season and lost in the postseason would fuel pundits' pens for years. Think of the object lessons! They're salivating at the prospect)

It really doesn't matter how incredible your regular season is; if you don't win the championship, you're not a special team.

See: '06 Cubs; '01 Mariners.

How do we know that all that juiced were named? I am not so sure, therefore, that artificial aid isn't required to be competitive.
