Let's not forget Genarlow Wilson, whose case only came into prominence after the sports media got a hold of it (promising athlete locked up). Prosecutorial zeal in that instance, while so far not leading to any disbarments, is preventing the bullheaded state attorneys of Georgia from just letting go and, in turn, letting him go.

Much like Yankee fans, lawyers don't take well to losing. Prosecutors even less so, as many feel that they are "on the side of the angels." They're generally smart and capable people, and are unaccustomed to being wrong, so it's a rare day that sees the graceful admission of error, and a far more common one that sees an overzealous attachment to one's case.

Nifong said stupid things. He wanted to win. That's his job, and he screwed up. When an accounts payable supervisor screws up at his job, some creditor goes lacking. When a prosecutor screws up, justice is wounded. I'd hazard that the second is the more socially significant dilemma, but I've never worked in accounting.

I hope these kids take to your implied suggestion and turn their settlement proceeds towards some noble end. I fear, however, that it'll go towards cargo shorts and Orange Juliuses. Now if we can move on, CNN says there's a pregnant white woman missing.
